“Should I allow my insurance company to interview me at home?”
No! There is rarely a good reason to let the insurance company into your home. We have reviewed past in-home interview reports that comment on the following:
• Whether the claimant’s home is clean or organized (an alleged sign of the claimant’s ability to maintain his or her home).
• Whether the claimant went to the restroom during the interview (without commenting that this would result in a stranger being left unsupervised in the claimant’s home).
• Whether the claimant got up or appeared uncomfortable during the interview.
• How the claimant looked while walking to the couch or kitchen (using these few steps to judge whether you can walk/stand for hours during a workday).
There are no questions that an interviewer would ask that cannot be asked over the telephone. In fact, you may be able to request that they provide their questions in writing, which would allow you more time to collect your thoughts and provide a more thorough and accurate response.
